Toledo, Ohio — The Toledo Police Department has released body camera footage following the arrest of a 15-year-old girl in north Toledo, an incident that is now drawing concern from city leaders and community groups.
Police say officers initially approached the teen and others for walking in the roadway. According to the report, the teen did not provide identification and resisted commands, leading to a physical altercation in which she was taken to the ground and handcuffed. Officers also allege the teen spit on an officer during the encounter.
Video of the incident, including footage shared online by the teen’s mother, has prompted calls for accountability. Vanice Williams is urging changes within the department, including additional de-escalation training and a review of the charges filed against the teen.
Police also reported managing a growing crowd at the scene, including the teen’s mother, who was briefly detained before being released without charges.
Wade Kapszukiewicz said officers were in the area following a separate recent incident involving a weapon but acknowledged concerns about how the arrest was handled.
The officer involved has been reassigned, according to the local NAACP chapter, which says it will continue to follow the case. The teen is scheduled to return to court on May 14.
