TOLEDO, Ohio — The company that owns The Blade says it is pursuing the sale of the newspaper’s assets, raising the possibility that the publication could cease operations if a buyer cannot be found.
Block Communications announced Tuesday that it has begun exploring a sale. If those efforts are unsuccessful, the newspaper plans to end both its print and digital editions after Dec. 31, 2026.
Founded in 1835, The Blade has served the Toledo area for more than 190 years and is recognized as the city’s oldest continuously operating business. The newspaper has been owned by the Block family since 1926.
Company officials said the decision follows years of financial challenges that have made continued operation under its current ownership unsustainable. The Blade currently employs 119 people.
The sale process is now underway, though no potential buyers have been identified publicly. If a purchaser is found, the newspaper could continue operating under new ownership.
