Grand Rapids, Ohio — The Grand Rapids Historical Society will continue its “250th Lecture Series” later this month with a presentation focused on the Civil War and the origins of Memorial Day.
The third program in the series, titled Civil War & Memorial Day, will be presented by Dr. Steven Bare on May 23 at 7 p.m. inside the auditorium of the historic Grand Rapids Town Hall.
The lecture series was created to celebrate 250 years of American history and features programs arranged chronologically from the Battle of Fallen Timbers through the Vietnam War. The events are scheduled to run from April through October.
Bare earned his Ph.D. in American History from the University of Toledo in 2019. His academic research focuses on how Americans remembered and commemorated the Civil War through World War I, including reunions, reconciliation efforts, patriotic ceremonies, and memorial activities connected to the conflict.
According to the Historical Society, Bare has published work in the Tennessee Historical Quarterly and continues researching Civil War memory, including Union veterans’ post-war pilgrimages and commemorative traditions. He also has more than 20 years of collegiate teaching experience and previously served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Toledo.
The Grand Rapids Historical Society said 13 programs are planned as part of the overall lecture series. Admission to all programs is free and open to the public.
