Grand Rapids, Ohio — Community members across the Grand Rapids and Weston areas are invited to honor fallen service members during a full day of Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, featuring cemetery tributes, patriotic music, guest speakers, and a public luncheon hosted by local veterans organizations.
The day begins at 9 a.m. at Beaver Creek Cemetery with a ceremony including the Pledge to the Flag, a speaker, poppy presentation, firing squad, and TAPS. A second ceremony will follow at 9:45 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with similar honors.
The main downtown Memorial Day program will begin at 10:30 a.m. and include an invocation from Pastor Scott Hergert, remarks from Mayor John Berry, the Pledge to the Flag led by Commander Bob Clark, and the National Anthem performed by the Otsego High School Band. Brett Green is scheduled as the featured speaker.
Organizers will also recognize veterans from World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Global War on Terrorism during the downtown ceremony. Additional portions of the program include a poem by Mary Jo Myers, placement of poppies by Linda Donald, a firing squad salute from Post #232 and SAL members, and TAPS performed by Jeff Thomas.
At 11:30 a.m., another ceremony will take place at St. Patrick’s Cemetery featuring Deacon Dave Krempec along with traditional Memorial Day honors including the firing squad and TAPS.
The day will continue with a public potluck lunch at noon at Post #232, where attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share. A final Memorial Day service is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Weston Cemetery.
In the event of rain, the downtown program will be moved indoors to Post #232 at 10:30 a.m.
