Toledo, Ohio – The City of Toledo is preparing for a potential change in its residential trash service as its current contract with Republic Services is set to expire in August.

After reviewing proposals from four waste collection companies, city administrators have selected Priority Waste as the preferred provider. The proposed agreement has been submitted to Toledo City Council, with a vote expected within the next month.

The contract under consideration would run for five years at an estimated cost of $13.5 million annually. City officials say the proposal includes upgraded service features such as real-time truck tracking, pickup verification through video, and integration with the city’s Engage Toledo system.

Council members have indicated that increased costs are likely regardless of which company is selected, citing rising service demands and ongoing expenses tied to bulk item collection and excess setouts. The city has reportedly spent more than $1.5 million each year addressing those additional pickups.

The selection process included presentations, interviews, site visits, and community feedback. Residents highlighted bulk item pickup as a top priority, along with overall service reliability.

At this time, officials do not anticipate residents needing new trash containers. Any changes to collection schedules or service details would be communicated ahead of the contract’s expected start in September.

A public hearing on the proposed contract is scheduled for Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Toledo City Council chambers.
