PROVIDENCE TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a McClure man Saturday afternoon in Providence Township.

The crash happened around 4:47 p.m. on August 9 at the intersection of State Route 295 (South River Road) and South Berkey Southern Road in Lucas County.

According to troopers from the Patrol’s Toledo Post, an 18-year-old driver from Grand Rapids, Ohio, was driving a 2015 Nissan Altima northeast on State Route 295 when she attempted to turn left onto South Berkey Southern Road. Investigators say her vehicle turned into the path of a 2003 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic motorcycle, operated by 67-year-old David A. Sheller of McClure, who was traveling southwest on South River Road.

Sheller was transported to the University of Toledo Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. The driver of the Altima was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Troopers said the driver of the Altima was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Sheller was not wearing a helmet. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be factors.

The intersection was closed for about two hours during the investigation but has since reopened. The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Waterville Police Department, Waterville Township Police Department, Lucas County Sheriff’s Office, Providence Township Fire & EMS, and Whitehouse EMS.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reminds drivers to remain alert and check twice before turning, especially for motorcycles.
