Jon Husted Appointed to U.S. Senate, Shaping Ohio’s Political Landscape for 2026

Jon Husted

Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted will take over JD Vance’s U.S. Senate seat following Vance’s resignation on Jan. 10 to become vice president. Gov. Mike DeWine made the announcement Friday, selecting Husted over several prominent Ohio Republicans who had been eyeing the position. Husted, a former Ohio House speaker and secretary of state, will serve until December 2026, when a special election will determine who completes the final two years of the term.

The Associated Press reports that Husted’s appointment could also shake up Ohio’s 2026 governor’s race, where he had been a frontrunner. DeWine praised Husted as a trusted partner with a deep understanding of Ohio. His selection may help avoid a costly Republican primary for governor, though competition remains.

With Ohio politics shifting, Northwest Ohio voters will be watching closely as the 2026 Senate and governor’s races take shape.
