TOLEDO, Ohio — A 17-year-old is in custody after a dramatic confrontation involving a stolen excavator on Toledo’s south side Sunday evening.

According to a Toledo police report, officers were called to the area of Hawley Street and Western Avenue shortly after 7:16 p.m. when a man reported seeing a teenager driving off in his excavator. The owner, joined by his son, attempted to intervene.

That’s when the situation escalated. Police say the teen began “swinging the bucket of the excavator” toward the pair as they tried to stop him. At one point, the owner fired a shot into the air in an effort to keep the suspect from injuring anyone, according to the report.

The confrontation ended when the owner and several others managed to pull the teen from the machine before officers arrived. Police noted the suspect suffered a nose injury while exiting the excavator and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The incident remains under investigation.
