TOLEDO, Ohio — Three people have died and two children remain in critical condition following an apparent carbon monoxide exposure inside a vehicle in Toledo on Wednesday.
Police and fire crews responded to the 300 block of Phillips Avenue around 11:10 a.m. after receiving a report of multiple people unconscious inside a vehicle.
According to officials, an adult in the vehicle had contacted the children’s father after experiencing a flat tire. When he arrived at the scene, he found all five occupants unresponsive and called for help.
Emergency responders treated the victims at the scene before transporting all five to area hospitals. Authorities initially deployed hazardous materials personnel while determining the cause of the medical emergency.
City officials later confirmed that three family members died. Two children remain hospitalized in critical condition.
Investigators said there is no indication of foul play. The incident remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances that led to the carbon monoxide exposure.
