Grand Rapids, OH – The Grand Rapids Village Council met in regular sessions throughout the fall, led by Mayor John Berry, to address a range of local initiatives, including support for land conservation efforts, approval of expenses, and preparations for upcoming community events. In a unanimous vote, the council approved Resolution 2024-10, supporting the Black Swamp Conservancy’s efforts to acquire and preserve Buttonwood Island through the Clean Ohio Conservation Fund. The conservancy aims to protect the island, which is adjacent to Howard Island, to further conserve natural habitats within the area.
Black Swamp Conservancy Gains Council Support for Conservation Project
Ellie Schiappa from the Black Swamp Conservancy attended to provide additional insight into the resolution. Schiappa outlined the conservancy’s goal to preserve Buttonwood Island in its natural state, similar to the nearby Howard Island, which they already manage. Access to the island would be regulated by permit, and preservation efforts could include habitat improvements and bank erosion control. The council’s support is a necessary component for the conservancy’s application to the state-funded Clean Ohio Conservation Fund, with applications due October 11.
Council members voted unanimously to suspend the typical three-reading rule to expedite the resolution, which passed with full support.
Village Finances and Service Inquiries Spark Council Discussion
The council approved an expenditure report totaling $12,506.88 from September 6 through September 19, covering various village services, storm damage cleanup, and attorney fees. Councilperson Lynn Sylvain raised questions about the expenses, noting costs such as $10,000 for tree services and additional bills for pool chemicals and alarm services. Village officials explained that some storm damage services remained incomplete, and additional pool maintenance bills were anticipated as seasonal work concludes.
Attorney fees drew particular attention, with Fiscal Officer Kristel Beyer estimating costs around $8,000. Sylvain, however, argued that fees, including additional survey expenses, might be closer to $27,000, though this figure remains unverified by official records.
Upcoming Holiday Events and Fall Activities Planned
Joe Schroeder from the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce updated the council on holiday events. The annual Christmas Open House and “Light up the Night” parade will proceed as scheduled, with the parade route extended to West Street this year. The Christmas tree lighting ceremony is planned for November 22 at 7 p.m.
