Grand Rapids, OH — During the regularly scheduled Grand Rapids Village Council meeting on Monday, January 27, Chamber of Commerce President Joe Schroeder addressed key economic concerns and proposed strategies to support the village’s growth.
Schroeder outlined the Chamber’s core mission to support and protect its members, emphasizing the need to refocus on this role and enhance collaboration with the village. “While we’ve taken on broader community functions similar to a convention and visitors bureau, it’s time to clearly define the Chamber’s specific responsibilities to better serve both our members and the community,” he stated.
Addressing recent challenges, Schroeder highlighted the impact of Laroe’s Restaurant’s closure, which has led to noticeable declines in downtown foot traffic and sales. He also expressed concern over vacant buildings, noting how significantly reduced property valuations affect tax revenues and the village’s economic health. “Maintaining strong property values benefits not just business owners, but all residents, supporting vital public services,” he added.
Schroeder advocated for a tourism-centered economic development strategy, leveraging Grand Rapids’ strengths in parks and outdoor recreation. He recommended forming an Economic Development Committee comprising Chamber representatives, business owners, residents, and council members to craft targeted strategies for tourism growth. Additionally, he suggested exploring funding options such as using interest income from water and sewer funds, potentially through investments like Star Ohio, to support tourism initiatives.
“Collaboration is crucial,” Schroeder emphasized. “By working together, we can proactively promote Grand Rapids through advertising, partnerships with regional tourism organizations, and enhancing our online presence.” He concluded by acknowledging the challenges facing local businesses and underscoring the need for innovative, cooperative solutions to foster sustainable economic growth in the village.
